The GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY for  Zion's Village Homes, was held  Friday, June 19, 2009, 10:00 A.M. at 3022 Mcilhenny Street, Houston, Texas, 77004.

Zion's Village Homes is a comprehensive, innovative affordable housing development project that will be located in  the historic neighborhood of Northern Third Ward.

The development includes building new innovative energy efficient homes for low to moderate income family homes with the goal of developing strong neighborhoods that meet the needs of their current residents and are attractive to new and returning families.

The City of Houston’s Housing and Community Development Department is providing $700,000  of federal HOME funds, and Whitney Bank is providing seed money to mobilize the first 2 of 10 lots donated by Midtown Redevelopment Authority (MRA).

ReWard Third Ward, Inc. (RWTW), a Certified Community Housing Development Organization in collaboration with the City of Houston’s Houston Hope Project, Midtown Redevelopment Authority (MRA) and Horizon International Builders, are working together to develop this project.

Since 1995, RWTW has been a pioneer in neighborhood revitalization by being the first Community Development Corporation created in Northern Third Ward to address the growing need for low to moderate income housing in this historical minority neighborhood.  The blueprint for the implementation of these initiatives is the updated 1999 Zion’s Village Master Plan.  This comprehensive neighborhood plan was created in partnership with the City of Houston Planning Department, and serves as our guiding development document.

Together with Horizon Builders and ABH Architectural Services, RWTW has worked to create and design this new project and still meet the affordable housing standard. The upcoming homes that are being designed will be equipped with multiple energy efficient and/or green elements which include solar screens, flow reducers, attic fans, strategic landscaping and vegetation placement, strategic placement of windows for wind and sun for full benefit of natural resources and renewable energy, cool roof decking and the utilization of materials and products from the Energy Star Program approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
